HOSHIARPUR: A 21-year-old youth was killed at Kothe Jattan village under Hariana police station when he intervened to stop some young men from resorting to celebratory gunfire during a marriage function. Among the 19 accused booked in the incident two are brothers of the bride to-be.
Deceased Maninder Singh's father Jagir said his son was hit in the chest and was declared brought dead when taken to a doctor.
He said they had gone to another villager Jaswinder Singh's home on December 15 night to attend 'jaago' (pre-marriage ceremony). He said during a dance programme, Jaswinder's two sons Gurpreet and Ajit Pal and his son-in-law Manjit and their friends began firing in the air and Maninder urged them to stop.
Jagir told police that around 9.30pm, when he was about to return home, Jaswinder came to him saying that Maninder had fallen unconscious. He said he found Maninder lying in a pool of blood, with a bullet hit close to the heart.
Police have booked Gurpreet, Ajitpal, Manjit and 16 others for murder, endangering life of others, rioting and illegal use of arms under sections 302, 336, 148 and 149 of the IPC and under section 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act.
