Cyber cops bust government job racket
KOLKATA: The cyber crime cell of Bidhannagar police busted a fake recruitment racket and arrested three persons from Dumdum Park.
The police claimed that the fake job racket, which used to run with the help of fake websites, duped people of several crores.
The gang leader has been identified as Avik Kumar Gupta, who hails from Rajmahal in Jharkhand. He was earlier arrested by Golabari police in Howrah last year after duping victims of Rs 5 crore.
His associates who have been arrested include Amit Adak, a resident of Digha, and Atanu Nandi, a resident of Goaltor in West Midnapore.
“The secretary of West Bengal Central School Service Commission lodged a complaint with us mentioning that a fake website has been created in the commission’s name. While the official website reads www.westbengalssc.com, the fake one read www.sscresult.org. Our cyber wing took over the case from Bidhannagar East police a few months ago. We arrested the three accused in the past few days. During interrogation, the accused said they have opened fake websites on the railway department, the state primary education commission, a department of West Bengal government, West Bengal police and even Kolkata police,” said Kankan Prasad Barui, DC-DD, Bidhannagar.
The simple modus operandi of the group assured good money. The accused used to target candidates appearing for the top government job entrance exams and promised them a job if they paid between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. Once they received the money, they created fake websites where all the candidates who paid money would be shown as successful. In the past seven months, the gang has managed to dupe hundreds of job aspirants, claimed police.

“We have seized several incriminating documents, including hard disks, pen drives and mobile phones, from the residence of the accused. We would like to request all those who have been duped by the gang to contact us and we will try to recover their money. Since one of the accused is a repeat offender, we are trying to slap harsher charges against him,” said Barui.
Last year, many fake appointment letters, fake railway stamps, government letterheads and other documents were seized from Gupta’s possession.
