Writing in the New York Review of Books, Martin Filler laments a renovation project already underway in the cathedral of Chartres, in which the interior walls are being painted in “bright whites and garish colors.”
The renovations, part of an $18.5 million project that is scheduled for completion in 2017, change the historic character of the building, Filler protests. Pointing out that modern lighting already brightens the interior, he asks how such a dramatic change was approved without thorough discussion among artistic and architectural experts.
