Man gets 10 years RI for abducting, raping minor girl after promising college admission
CHENNAI: A city court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a minor girl.
According to the prosecution, Nalini (name changed) of Namkkal district had scored good marks in senior secondary examination in 2011. She gave an interview to a Tamil daily in which she said she wanted to secure an MBBS seat and become a doctor.
M Kannan, a history sheeter from Rajapalayam, Virudunagar, read the interview.
He met her parents and told them he was an official in the secretariat. As he had the right contacts, he could easily secure admission for Nalini in a good medical college in Chennai. He would also get an MBBS seat for Nalini's 16-year-old younger sister, said Kannan.
The parents and their daughters along with few relatives left for Chennai on December 19, 2011. They met Kannan at Maduravoyal and hired two cabs to go to the secretariat. Kannan was with Nalini's mother in a taxi. Her husband and other relatives were in a separate cab. Near Choolaimedu, he stopped the taxi and abducted Nalini.
He took the girl to Samayapuram near Trichy and booked a room in a lodge using a fake identity. He promised to marry Nalini if she consented to sex. When she refused, he raped her repeatedly. Later he took her to Thiruparangundram. He was always on the move to dodge arrest.
On December 23, based on a tip off, police nabbed Kannan at Mattuthavani bus stand in Madurai. Choolaimedu police registered case against Kannan under Section 376 (rape), 336 (doing an act that endangers life or personal safety of others), 342 (wrongful confinement), 366 (A) (procuration of a minor girl), and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation if threat be to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC.
Mahila court judge Meena Sathish sentenced him to undergo ten years each for offences under Section 366 (A) and 376, a year of RI under section 342, and three years under 506(2). All the sentences will run concurrently.
