SITAMARHI: Sitamarhi Fast Track Court (FTC) ADJ Md Irshad Ali on Tuesday awarded two accused Pooja Kumari and former collectorate employee Virendra Sah to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) besides slapping a fine Rs 50,000 on each of them in Kanchan Bala suicide case of 2012. In case of default, both will have to undergo six months’ additional imprisonment. Twenty five percent of the fine amount will go to the parents of Kanchan Bala.
Four other accused-Lovely Kumari, Gauri Yadav, Akhilesh Paswan and Bhairav Yadav were acquitted for want of sufficient evidence against them.

Kanchan Bala, a BSc (Mathematics hons) student of BRA Bihar University, 24, had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at Sitamarhi court colony rented accommodation in 2012. A native of village Harsinghpur under Runnisaidpur police station in Sitamarhi district, she had taken the extreme step after getting fed up of blackmailing, torture and molestation bid by a group of six persons. In her six page suicide note, she had blamed several persons including the then Dumra police station SHO Ram Nandan Prasad and the then SP Vivek Kumar for her plight. She had met them to seek help but they had reportedly failed to protect her from her tormentors.
On hearing the judgement on Sitamarhi court premises with tearful eyes, parents of Kanchan Bala didn't seem visibly satisfied. They plan to move the high court to seek justice.
