Teachers under the banner of the Association of Calicut University Teachers (ACT) staged a satyagraha on the Calicut University campus on Monday, expressing solidarity with the striking students. The teachers demanded immediate steps to end the students’ strike and to restore academic ambience on the campus.

ACT general secretary P. Sivadasan staged a fast from morning to evening. His colleagues took leave and sat with him through the day. Social critic and academic K.E.N. Kunjahammed inaugurated the satyagraha. The teachers warned of going on strike if the authorities failed to end the students’ strike.

Students under the Departmental Students Union have been on strike for over two months demanding separate hostels for students of self-financing physical education programmes. The striking students oppose accommodating the students of self-financing streams at regular hostels claiming that the funds meant for subsidised general education should not be used for such students.
