IIT-Guwahati dean of academic affairs AK Ghosal arrested on charges of rape

Assam Police on Tuesday arrested dean of academic affairs of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, Aloke Kumar Ghoshal on charges of allegedly raping a staff member of the institution 12 days ago.

GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Tuesday arrested dean of academic affairs of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, Aloke Kumar Ghoshal on charges of allegedly raping a staff member of the institution 12 days ago.
IIT is India's premier engineering and management educational institute. There are 16 IITs in the country.
The victim, a senior office assistant, filed the complaint with the police on Friday after which the police picked up the dean on Monday and arrested him on Tuesday, senior superintendent of police of Guwahati AP Tiwari said.

A source in the IIT said that Ghoshal has been removed from the administration and a new dean has been appointed.
Ghoshal is also a professor in the chemical engineering department.
He has a B Tech degree in chemical engineering from B. Calcutta University and M Tech and a doctor of philosophy (chemical engineering) from IIT, Kharagpur.
