The cyber crime wing police personnel are piecing together information on the hacking of the internationally acclaimed Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji Sarasawathi Mahal Library’s official website.
Pakistani snoopers had reportedly vandalised the site and the act came to light on Friday when librarian Sudarshan accessed the website and found t that access to the site was blocked with slogans and flag splashed across the home page .
Police sources indicated that the official had reached out to the District Collector, N. Subbaiyan, who is also holding additional charge as the Director of the Library, following which efforts to get the site unlocked were set in motion.
Mr. Sudarshan also lodged a complaint at the Thanjavur West Police Station which registered a case under Section 65 and 66 (d) of the Information Technology Act and began an inquiry.
The cyber crime wing personnel got in touch with the web administrator to finally restore the website and its contents.
Police are looking into various angles to the issue as reports on hacking of the official website of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple trickled in. While they are mum on whether the two incidents have any link, they confess to the hardship involved in pinning down the culprits involved in the hacking.
Meanwhile, Mr. Subbaiyan stated that the library website, www.tmssmlibrary. in, has resumed activity after the brief trouble and assured that all its contents were safe.
The Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library, functioning on the palace complex here, has been in existence for more than five centuries now after being strengthened by the Nayak kings who ruled Thanjavur. Then the library got a powerful boost during the reign of the Maratha ruler, multilingual intellectual King Serfoji II, who singularly contributed to its international glory of today. A premier national repository of original documents and manuscripts, the library boasts more than 65,000 titles and 50,000 palm-leaf manuscripts. Besides, over 500 titles have been published by the library that is a must on the itinerary of the international tourist visiting Thanjavur.
