They are dealing with their own grief and anxiety of losing their crops to a horrendous hailstorm, but a bunch of farmers from Niphad tehsil in Nashik didn't think twice before helping out a woman who sold off her mangalsutra to invest in her and husband's vineyard. Though in the same boat, farmers from Ruee and other villages contributed money and gifted their 'sister' a 10 gms gold mangalsutra.

Sarika Balasaheb Wagh, from Talegaon, had told chief minister Devendra Fadnavis about her woes when he visited the hailstorm affected areas of Nashik on Sunday. Showing him a black thread around her neck, she told Fadnavis that she had used her mangalsutra to raise money for her husband who was growing grapes. With what had appeared to be a good harvest, Sarika and her husband had hoped to buy another mangalsutra after they got some money of the yield. However, the rains and hailstorm destroyed their crop. She also told the chief minister that it was now difficult for her to make ends meet and her children had also taken sick. The chief minister was visibly moved by the sorrow.

Going a step further, farmers and villagers got together, contributed whatever they could and bought a mangalsutra worth Rs 27,000 and gifted it to Sarika.

"We heard the story of Sarikatai and were moved. What we did was spontaneous. The loss and damage to the farmers is so huge that apart from financial assistance what we need now is support. We thought this way we could show our brethren in distress that we have to help each other and support ourselves. We understand the suffering of others as we are going through the same," said Kailas Taskar, sarpanch, Ruee.

Sarika and her husband Dyneshwar were overwhelmed. "We have no words to express gratitude. Help from our brethren when they too have lost everything is a huge gesture of support," they said.
