45 hospitals with the lowest readmission rates

Even though a recent study found readmission rates are not an adequate indicator of a hospital's overall performance, hospitals in the U.S. are still prompted to reduce readmission rates or be penalized by Medicare under the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program.

The national 30-day rate of readmissions after hospital discharge is 16, according to data from Hospital Compare. However, some hospitals have much lower readmission rates than the national average.

Listed below are the 45 hospitals with 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates at or below 13.7. Data was pulled from CMS' Hospital Compare website, and the rates reflect data measured from July 2011 through June 2012.
