MUMBAI: The son of their former caretaker has been arrested for the murder of the Dahanu based Irani couple in their farmhouse last Tuesday. Robbery was the motive, said the police.
The bodies of Naushir Irani (76) and his wife Nargis (74) were found in their farmhouse in Kotim village of Dahanu on December 10. The bodies were discovered by their help Surekha Pardhi who was asked to visit the bungalow by the couple's daughter who had not heard from her parents on December 9 and got worried.
While Naushir was found dead in the kitchen, Nargis's body was found underneath a tree on their 15 acre plot.
The police on Monday arrested Ravi Thakur (30), the son of their former caretaker Ramkhilawan from Surat in Gujarat. He was the prime suspect as the caretaker of an adjoining bungalow had seen him in the area a day before the murder. He has been remanded to police custody till December 24.
Ravi worked in the Irani's house as a teen. On three occasions he was caught stealing from the Iranis bungalow. His father returned to their native town in Uttar Pradesh due to ill health. Ravi remained in Dahanu doing odd jobs. He was prevented from visiting the couple.
Police said that Ravi had entered the farmhouse with the intention to rob. He had planned to rob the couple after they returned from the US over a month ago. He killed Naushir and was fleeing from the farmhouse, when Nargis returned from her evening walk. He slit her throat and robbed her gold earrings and chain.
