Cops to question chikoo traders who were last to see couple alive
In the case of the murder of an elderly Irani couple in Dahanu, the Vangaon police are to question two chikoo traders who were last to see one of the victims alive. Noushir Irani (80) and his wife Nargis (76) were found dead by a domestic help in Palghar’s Vangaon on Wednesday morning. Naushir’s body was found in the kitchen with blunt injuries to the head, while Nargis’ body was found under a chikoo tree outside the house, with her throat slit.

Surendra Ojha (28), a local chikoo trader who used to purchase bulk of chikoos from the couple’s farm, said he and his elder brother Suryanath (32) had met Naushir three days before his death.

“We have been asked by the Vangaon police to be present in the station for questioning. I met Naushir three days before his death, as I had come to pick up the fortnightly chikoo produce. We used to visit the farm every fortnight. In fact, we had also met Rustom, Naushir’s son-in-law, at the same time,” said Surendra.

Meanwhile Mehrnosh Irani, a relative of the victims, said the Vangaon police have also called Dr Adil Irani, the couple’s son. “Adil is an acclaimed cardiac surgeon in the US. As per my information, he will stay in Vangaon for a month to participate in the rituals after cremation,” he said.

He added that they had informed the Vangaon police that regular thefts took place in Iranis’ godown but the couple did not report the matter to the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Boisar Circle, Said Vijaykant Sagar said, “We are examining all aspects of the case.” Meanwhile, the last rites for the couple were conducted at the Tower of Silence in Kemps Corner on Friday, and were attended by the victims’ children, Adil and Tanaaz, and other relatives.
