MADURAI: Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Vasanon Sunday urged the central government to make a move to lift the ban on jallikattu, which was a traditional game of the Tamil people.
Vasan stopped here on his way to Virudhunagar, and said that his party would press the Centre to remove the ban. Jallikattu, which involves bull fighting and bullock cart race, was banned by the Supreme Court in May, citing violation of animal rights.

The TMC president also demanded that the hike in power tariff be revoked with immediate effect, failing which his party would launch state-wide protests by involving the public. He said his party was committed to giving Tamil Nadu a free and transparent Kamaraj rule.
Later, Vasan flagged off a procession taken out by his cadres to enroll new members into his party. TMC members took out a rally in around 40 autorickshaws. He then proceeded to the Kamaraj Memorial in Virudhunagar and paid homage, before proceeding to Tirunelveli district for his cadre-enrolling campaign. Party leader Gnanadesikan, Peter Alphonse, former MP N S V Chitthan, A G S Rambabu, among others, were present.
