Navagraha, or the nine planets, have always had a close relationship with mankind. Bhrigushree Monica Anand, the founding-member and director of Bhrigu Shastram, a group of Bhrigu Shastris committed to spread the beauty and goodness of Bhrigu Jyotish, continues her story about navagrahas:

“Once upon a time, all nine grihas, planets, had an argument about who was the best among them. They decided to approach Lord Indra, who put the ball in their court by asking them to describe their powers to him.

After Surya, Chandra and Mangal had introduced themselves (refer to the previous three articles), it was Budh’s turn to talk about his powers. Hearing Budh logically list his powers, Guru Brihaspati decided to tell his story.

Guru Brihaspati said: When I bless a person, I grant him good education, knowledge and respect from others. If I am happy with someone, I bless the person with good luck and marital bliss.

My position in a person’s birth-chart also decides the sex of the child. I fill a person’s life with money and good family life, family togetherness, good speech, property, immovable assets, etc.

If a person is born on my day, Guru Brihaspati or Thursday, he is organised, is an intellectual, has strict principles, is quick to grasp, and becomes a king, educationist, poet, writer, advocate, judge or a politician. He can also be a yogi, and earn a lot of respect in society.

I help keep a check on anger in a person’s life. In Satya Yuga, I incarnated as Raja Harishchandra. In Treta Yuga, I was Rama and in Dwapar Yuga, I was Krishna. In Kali Yuga, I represent good knowledge, respect for elders, peace, good behaviour and patience.

On Brihaspativaar, Thursday, women should worship the pipal tree, vat tree, or the banana tree. The day can also be marked by wearing yellow-coloured clothes and donating food and prasada like yellow dals and fruits.

It is auspicious to begin an educational course, prepare for exams, observe a fast, pray or teach on a Thursday.

I am the lord of Dhanu rashi or Sagittarius people as well as Meena rashi or Pisces people. Mangal and Surya are my friends, while Shukra is my enemy.

I am Jupiter, located 77,80,00,000 kms from the Sun, with a diameter of 1,43,640 kms and gravity that is 317 times more in comparison to the Earth. Hence, I am filled with gases. If a person weighs about 77 kg on earth, he would weigh only about 22 kg on Jupiter.

A weak Brihaspati in someone’s birth-chart causes stomach problems, jaundice, cancer, cataract, etc. Wearing a pukhraj or topaz set in gold after proper consultation or wearing a Guru Yantra charged by a healer will allow you to channel my beneficial effects.

The guru mantra that can be recited on Thursdays is: Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Guruvayeh Namah. Listening to the 108 names of Vishnu — the Vishnu Sahasranamam is blissful.

Next week, an exciting article on Shukra Griha…
