NTR signboards yet to come up at airport

December 14, 2014 11:14 pm | Updated 11:14 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Weeks after the domestic terminal of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad was named after legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister late N.T. Rama Rao, the signage and other initiatives to the effect at the airport.

Though authorities at the GMR airport had received official communication in this regard from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry in November, they are yet to implement the order. When quizzed on the issue, they said the implementation was still under way.

The naming of the terminal by the NDA government had resulted in controversy with some BJP and Congress leaders from Telangana taking objection to it. The local leaders also wrote to the Centre asking for withdrawal of the order, citing that NTR was neither associated with the Telangana movement nor did he hail from the State.

This is not the first time that the late Chief Minister’s name has been decided for a section of the airport. In the past, when the airport was at Begumpet, the domestic terminal too was named after the late NTR.
