Arsenal have reportedly reignited their interest in Spartak Moscow midfielder Romulo Monteiro after a failed move during last season's January transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, the Brazilian midfielder's agents have got in touch with the Gunners and are hoping to push through a deal in the upcoming transfer window next month.

The Spartak midfielder, who joined from Brazilian club Vasco in 2012 has been likened to former Arsenal star and defensive midfielder Gilberto Silva, who was part of Arsene Wenger's 'invincibles'.

Arsene Wenger is on the market for a defensive midfielder, as he continues his search for a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, who currently occupies that position.

The north London club have been linked to various players in recent months with Grzegorz Krychowiak and William Carvalho the most frequently mentioned names.

The Russian club are willing to let the player move during the January transfer window and are willing to accept a fee of around £8m to part with the midfielder.

However, they are also asking Arsenal to send Yaya Sanogo the other way on a season-long loan, but the French striker is not keen to go to Moscow.

Apart from Arsenal, there are clubs in the midfielder's home country that are interested in signing him, but the midfielder is keen on joining Arsenal in the Premier League.

Eariler in the year, reports suggested that the Gunners boss has made the Brazilian midfielder his primary January target and is ready to offer up to £9.5m for the player.

Romulo has made eight appearances for the Brazil national team, and is quite a favourite of national coach Dunga, who has tipped the 24-year-old midfielder to be a future midfield star.
