MUMBAI: A taxi driver was arrested with a country-made pistol and eight live cartridges outside a hotel in Santacruz (W) on Saturday. The accused, Brijesh Singh (32), a resident of a slum a Kandivli (W), was first detained for questioning when the police learnt from sources that the taxi driver used to carry a firearm.
“A taxi driver keeping a gun is a serious issue,” a police officer said.
The police are on a drive this month to check the background of all taxi and auto drivers in the city, a precautionary measure launched after the recent rape of a woman in Delhi by a cab driver with a police record.
