NASHIK: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has served improvement notices to five hotels and restaurants in the city, which were found unhygienic during inspection. These hotels have been asked to improve their hygienic conditions within a month.
The FDA has taken the initiative to ensure the quality of food being served at hotels and restaurants.
The initiative is part of the FDA's drive ahead of the forthcoming Kumbh mela, which is beginning from July next year. Around 75 lakh people and three lakh sadhus are expected to visit the city during the mega religious event.
Chandrakant Pawar, joint commissioner (Nashik division) of FDA, told TOI, "The Kumbh mela is around the corner. As lakhs of people will visit the city during the event, their health will be a major issue for us. Hence, we have decided to inspect the quality of food and hygienic conditions at hotels, restaurants and eateries for the safety of pilgrims. Accordingly, our teams inspected hotels and restaurants in the Panchavati area. During inspection, we found that hygienic conditions at five hotels and restaurants were not as per norms. Hence, we have served notices to these hotels asking them to improve their conditions within a month."
"The kitchens of these hotels were unclean; they had no bills of the procured raw material. We will take action against them if they don't improve even after being served notices," he said.
"The hotels that were served notices are located at Ramkund in Panchavati, Sardar Chowk, Panchavati Karanja, Malegaon Stand and Shani Chowk," he added.
The inspection drive will continue across the city until the commencement of Kumbh mela. Besides checking the food quality, the FDA officials are also inspecting how these hotels cook food and cleanliness in the kitchens. Initially, improvement notices of a month are served to the erring hoteliers. Thereafter, action is taken against the hoteliers concerned if the FDA fails to see any improvement.
There are around 3,000 hotels and eateries across the city. The divisional office is located in the city, which covers five districts - Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar.
