GURGAON: Seeking removal of Union law minister Sadananda Gowda from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet for terming khaps illegal and unconstitutional, the self-styled social councils from Haryana on Saturday decided to call a mahapanchahayat at New Delhi in February on the issue.
Leaders of 600 khaps would be invited for the mahapanchayat, the date of which is yet to be decided.
Khaps have termed Gowda as "ignorant", reminding that PM Modi and Haryana chief ministers have recognized the role of these bodies. About one-and-a-half dozen khap leaders met at Jind on Saturday to condemn Gowda's statement.
"He belongs to southern part of the country so he is not aware about the history. He should either take back his comments or he should resign," said Tek Ram Kandela, president of Jind district's Kandela khap.
