4-yr-old boy deprived of ventilator is no more

Akash, 4, son of a construction worker who fell from the first floor of an under-construction building in Koramangala on Tuesday morning, succumbed to injuries on Friday. His parents were made to run from pillar to post in search of a ventilator when the accident occurred before he was moved to Vani Vilas hospital, but it was too late by then. He had suffered severe head injuries.
The parents rushed him to several government hospitals, including Nimhans and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, but could not find a hospital which would put him on the ventilator. For close to four hours, they were running around in search of ventilator before they finally managed to get a bed at Vani Vilas Hospital. Even though the doctors said that he was out of danger on Wednesday, he died on Friday. One of the neighbours said, “If he had been treated immediately after being put on ventilator, he would have survived.”
Dr Gangadhar Belavadi, medical superintendent, Vani Vilas Hospital, said, “Ours is a teaching hospital which has to concentrate both on teaching and treating patients. If we increase the ventilator beds, we need to increase the space as each bed requires at least 120-150 sq ft and we also require at least two nursing staff.”
