Apparel manufacturers pin hopes on marriage season, Sankranti to boost sales

November 06, 2014 10:59 pm | Updated July 21, 2016 05:13 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

After registering less sales during Dasara and Deepavali, apparel manufacturers are pinning hopes on the forthcoming marriage season and Sankranti festival to improve their sales across the State.

There is a ‘Sukra Mudham’ from September 18 to November 30, which is considered inauspicious. Marriages can be performed only between December 3 and 12. Later, good ‘muhurtams’ are available from January 22 to March 15, 2015. In addition, Christmas, New Year and Sankranti celebrations will pave way for the brisk sales, said manufacturers.

“Of the total business turnover a year, we register more business during November, December and January,” explained Apparel Manufacturers and Marketers Association president G.V.S. Harischandra. He said Dasara and Deepavali contribute only 10 per cent of the total sales while the rest is mainly registered during the year-end and January.

He said sales will go up in mid January as most of the families buy new clothes on the eve of Sankranti which is celebrated on a grand note for three days in this region. Close to 150 brands of ready-made menswear available in low, middle and higher segments are sold at different outlets with a cost ranging from Rs.449 to Rs.3,000.

Mr. Harischandra said more than 10,000 people across Andhra Pradesh were into the retail apparel trade and Vijayawada is set to become a hub for garments business as the new Capital is coming up here. Instead of going to Hyderabad, retailers, especially from coastal districts, will be coming to Vijayawada for buying the stock, he said.

On an average, the manufacturers will do business worth more than Rs.1,000 crore in the State every year, he added.
