In a bid to contribute to the area in which he was born and brought up, senior advocate from the city Madireddi Subba Rao has decided to adopt Jawahar Street, one of the biggest streets in the city, and to convert it into a model street by ensuring it a litter-free zone with lush green vegetation.

One of the leading advocates of yesteryears from the coastal regions, Mr. Subba Rao, 87, has come forward to set up and maintain litter bins in the street, build eco-friendly toilets for the benefit of the public, renovate the ‘Pushkarini’ of goddess Bala Tripura Sundari by way of developing a walking track around it and taking up plantation drive on the bunds of the tank.

“At a time when I am thinking of contributing something to my motherland, the call for ‘Swachh Bharat’ given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attracted me a lot. I have decided to focus on cleanliness and maintain sanitation in a proper manner at least in my street,” says Mr. Subba Rao, who convinced the officials of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation and that of the Endowments Department to go ahead with his plans.

“The Pushkarini renovation works are nearing completion. We have already procured litter bins and tri-cycles to collect and transport the solid wastes. With regard to the plantation drive, we are launching it in one side of the road, as the civic authorities are planning to lay a pipeline on the other side. Once the pipeline works are completed, the plantation drive will be finished on a war-footing,” he said.

Besides guarding the plants with tree-guards, Mr. Subba Rao has made arrangements to water the plants every day. “This cleanliness drive is the new task taken up by our Madireddi Subbarao Social Services, which is into the charity activities for many years,” he says.

As a token of recognition to his initiative, Ministers Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, N. Chinarajappa, MPs Tota Narasimham and Konakalla Narayana, and others are going to attend the formal inauguration of the cleanliness drive on the premises of McLaurin High School on December 13. “I have some more plans to develop the street as a model street and I am also inviting suggestions from the public for this cause,” says Mr. Subba Rao.
