Radiation tests will be conducted for every mobile tower: MP minister
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to test each and every mobile phone tower in the state for radiation. Minister for urban administration Kailash Vijayavargiya said this in reply to a call-attention motion raised by Congress MLA Arif Aqueel in the state assembly on Friday.
In the call attention, Arif Aqueel argued that cell phone towers should not be situated at locations close to markets, public places or populated areas because the radiation from these could cause deadly ailments in humans as well as animals and birds.
He said that various studies have concluded that radiation from mobile phone towers could give diseases like cancer, memory loss, brain tumours and other fatal diseases.
Replying to the call attention, urban development minister Vijayavargiya said that so far all tests conducted have proved that the intensity of the radiation waves from these towers is not threatening to humans. He said he is sensitive to the issue and has gone through various study reports himself. It was revealed that deadly diseases occur in humans when the intensity of radiation is high. So far TRAI has conducted random tests in Madhya Pradesh but found nothing worrisome. The minister also said that there are illegal mobile towers also in the state which is a cause for concern.
"The government had initiated action against all telecom companies that installed mobile phone towers without proper authorisation. But these companies went to High Court and got a stay order. The state has appealed to the High Court for quick dispensation of this case. I would request all those present in the House to provide us with copies of reports that could help us present a strong case before the High Court," Vijayavargiya said. He pointed out that the United States continues with the regular mobile towers while in France, towers have been made smaller so their radiation intensity is much less. He also said that Madhya Pradesh is the only state in the country which has enacted a law for erection of mobile towers in 2012.
