Bollywood monopoly of booking consecutive weeks for a big release might have come to draw finally as filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has dared to slate the release of his upcoming movie, Ugly, a week after Aamir Khan's PK.
But Anurag hasn't done it with the intention of clashing with PK, or eating into the film's box-office earnings. He explains, "There is no question of clashing with PK.
Had it not been for them, Ugly wouldn't be releasing now. PK has its own audience and it's because of them we have got a three week vacant window."

"So when people are done watching the film in the first weekend and thrice over by the first week, Ugly will be an alternative for the audiences. People have been awaiting a good film for a while and PK will get audiences back to the theaters," he reasons.
But the announcement did seem quite sudden, which was Phantom's strategy of promoting the much awaited, critically lauded Ugly, ahead of its release. "I find the kind of promotional activity executed these days to be a waste of resources. We were always sure that we will release this film with controlled promotions. Our marketing strategy will be very focused. We are well aware of who will be the film's target audience and have adequate mediums at hand to reach out to them. The film will release in nearly 300-400 screens and our target is the multiplexes primarily."

The film that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier had received rave reviews but Anurag was fighting a legal battle with the Court to remove the non smoking disclaimer from scenes. He lost the case and that added to the film's delay. The wait was long for him and the critically acclaimed filmmaker agrees that it was infuriating for him.
However, Anurag admits that he feels this is his best work till date. Elucidating on the plotline, Kashyap added, "It's a unique dark thriller that revolves around a missing kid and the emotional turmoil of her parents. The primary facet is the tug between the real father and the step father."
The film's trailer will be out this weekend. We managed to catch the scratch version of the trailer and it was all grit and looked intense. Ugly will release on 26th December, 2014.
