Despite low arrivals, CTC dust grades witnessed a spurt in prices at the Kochi tea auction this week. The market was dearer by ₹2 to ₹4 and sometimes more. It also appreciated further in value as the sale progressed.

In sale no 50, the quantity on offer was 10,84,000 kg, which was low compared to last week. The demand was good, with 85 per cent sold.

However, plainer teas were irregular and sometimes lower. They also witnessed a lot of withdrawal. There was active participation from upcountry buyers, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said.

The quantity on offer in the Orthodox grades was also lower at 15,500 kg. With less demand, the market was lower with heavy withdrawals. A small quantity of Orthodox dust sold was absorbed by exporters and upcountry buyers.

In the Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹97-159, medium grades quoted ₹68-105, and the plain variety stood at ₹56-69.

Leaf sales at the auction witnessed a downward trend, with prices quoting lower in almost all varieties. The offered quantity in Orthodox grades was 152,000 kg. The market for Nilgiri Bolder Brokens remained barely steady. Smaller brokens were irregular and lower, witnessing some withdrawals.

With fair demand, the quantity on offer in the CTC varieties was 90,500 kg. The market was lower and witnessed a lot of withdrawals. Export demand was also subdued.

In the dust category, Monica SFD quoted the best prices of ₹159, followed by Waterfall SFD at ₹147. In the leaf grades, Chamraj OP fetched the best prices of ₹419, followed by Chamraj FOP at ₹401.
