A woman was asked to switch off her cellphone for a technical update

Hyderabad: An anonymous number flashed on the mobile phone of Malathi V. (name changed) while she was at work at Gachibowli, and the caller requested her to shut down her phone for half-an-hour as it was being updated to 3G.
Believing it to be a technical update, she shut down her phone and entered a meeting. But half-an-hour later, she got suspicious and switched on her phone. There were no messages of any upgradation, but there were 20 missed calls from family members and messages asking her whereabouts.
Worried she called home to find that someone had called her parents and asked for ransom money. Ms Malathi explained, “We really don’t know what it was. The call was like any normal call. I never thought it would take this shape. My parents were very worried. But we didn’t want to go to the police as no number had flashed on the phone.”
Upset, she alerted her friends, relatives and also extended family members of these pranks being carried out and asked them to be very careful. This is a new trick doing the rounds and people are asking friends on social media and WhatsApp to not switch off their phones if requested by unknown people.
