A pear-shaped D-color VVS1 diamond of 89.23 carats sold for nearly $11.1 million (including premium) at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale. The diamond, mounted in a platinum setting, sold for $124,000 per carat.

It was the top lot of the sale held December 10, which totaled more than $66.6 million, selling 75 percent by lot and 85 percent by value. The sale featured a strong mix of colorless and colored diamonds among its best sellers, with a strand of natural pearls also making it into the top 10. It marked the last sale of the year for Christie’s Americas, which produced a final tally of approximately $188 million in 2014. Worldwide jewelry sales amounted to approximately $740 million for the year, although a complete sales report will be released by the auction house in January 2015.

Other sales of note in New York include a pair of pear-shaped fancy light yellow diamond ear pendants of 52.88 and 51.46 carats that sold for more than $5.4 million, double its presale estimate; and a 5.25-carat Burmese ruby ring by Harry Winston that fetched $1.65 million, more than triple its low estimate.
