Another jam, but averted by traffic cops’ quick response
Lucknow: Two days after the massive traffic jam caused by protesters in front of the state assembly, Charbagh-Nishantganj passage came to a halt once again for nearly half an hour on Thursday, when police lathicharged to disperse nearly 2,500 protesters gathered around Vidhan Bhawan.
Junior teachers from different districts of Uttar Pradesh held a protest near the state assembly for delay in issuing appointment letters to them.
The demonstration brought traffic to a standstill on the busy road at 12:30pm.
Quick reaction of the police, however, did not let protesters jam the traffic for hours. Police forced the protesters to march down to Laxman mela park and made quick diversions to release pressure of traffic.
Although the short jam did trigger a chain reaction congesting main routes leading to Hazratganj, traffic was diverted to alternative roads but ended up causing jam in Cantonment, old Lucknow and parts of Mahatma Gandhi marg.
The worst affected routes were MG road from Parivartan square to Raj Bhawan; Trilokinath marg, Rana Pratap Marg, Sapru Marg; Sarojini Naidu marg via Major Banks road to BN road of Lalbagh area; Cantonment road to Qaiserbagh roundabout; Burlington intersection to Charbagh.
While people were struggling on these roads, situation on alternative routes was no better. Trouble began at noon, when teachers started assembling outside Vidhan Sabha, leaving traffic in disarray all along the route. Traffic on the 500-metre Hazratganj-Royal Hotel stretch was jammed from both sides, following which police resorted to lathicharge, allegedly leading to injuries to some of them.
Shalini Yadav from Kanpur received serious injuries and was admitted to Civil Hospital. Five men were detained by the police during the protest on the allegation of disobedience.
