Buzz is Parambrata Chatterjee and Mimi Chakrabarty have been approached to play Hamlet and Ophelia in the movie It seems that
Shakespeare is the flavour of the season. Weeks after Vishal Bhardwaj's Hamlet adaptation,
Haider, won rave reviews, we hear that
Anjan Dutt is gearing up to adapt the Shakespeare classic in Bengali for the big screen. The buzz is that Parambrata Chatterjee and
Mimi Chakraborty are being considered for important roles, presumably Hamlet and Ophelia.
It's a happy coincidence that Tollywood is also gearing up for another Shakespeare adaptation, that of Romeo and Juliet by Aparna Sen. The film, which stars Dev and newcomer Rittika, goes on the floors in January. Dutt has himself adapted Othello for the stage a while back.
With Shakespeare, Dutt seems to be looking for a sureshot script that will fire. His last film,
Shesh Boley Kichu Nei that starred Jisshu U Sengupta and Subhashree, did not set the box office alight. Mimi, who is shooting for Raj Chakrabarty's
Kath Mundu in Nepal's Pokhra, could not be reached for a confirmation. Parambrata declined to comment, but we've heard that he has already listened to parts of the script. When we asked Dutt to confirm if he was indeed planning a Hamlet adaptation, he smiled and labelled it just rumours". We'd like to believe he was just being discreet.
