Man found not guilty on 12 arson charges in mezuzah fires

A Brooklyn drug addict on trial for setting a dozen mezuzahs on fire inside two Orthodox Jewish apartment buildings in Williamsburg was acquitted on 12 arson charges Wednesday but will still face up to 15 years in prison for burglary.

Ruben Ubiles, 36, was charged with burning 11 of the mezuzahs – which observant Jews affix to the outside of their doors – on Holocaust Memorial Day in 2013.

“I realize mezuzahs have a lot of meaning to Jewish people, but that wasn’t featured in the charges,” said a juror, who added that Ubiles’ videotaped confession was unclear and unconvincing.

“It just came down to there wasn’t enough evidence for the arsons [but] someone obviously started the fires. Maybe he got lucky that there wasn’t surveillance footage on those floors.”

Ubiles has 40 prior arrests and when cops came to arrest him for the arsons he was hiding naked under his girlfriend’s bed.

When the jury found him not guilty on the arson counts he turned and smiled to his girlfriend.

Defense attorney Morris Shamuil said his client went into the building to do drugs but has maintained from the beginning that he didn’t light any fires.

He’ll be sentenced Jan. 14.
