GHAZIABAD: A Hapur businessman and his grandfather had a lucky escape when flames engulfed their Maruti Zen Estilo car, retro-fitted with a CNG kit, and the doors and windows got locked inexplicably. This is the second instance involving a CNG-run car in five days.
The 35-year-old businessman, Vikas Tyagi, said it happened less than five minutes after “I had filled up my car with CNG at about 11 am, and was driving on NH-24 along Govindpuram.
My car suddenly burst into flames near a petrol pump. As I tried to emerge from it, I found the doors and windows had got locked on their own. I was trapped with my aged grandfather inside the inferno. It was terrifying.” Tyagi continued, “Stretching out from my driver’s seat, I started kicking the navigator’s window furiously. After what seemed like hours, the window gave way, and we escaped unhurt. All we could do was watch the car burn down completely.”
While Tyagi suffered burns on his face and hands, his grandfather sustained burns on his face. Both were given first aid at a local hospital and asked to continue treatment as out-patients.
