Man pulls off prank carjacking with toy gun, held for robbery

After over an hour of checking cars at nakabandis the police reached the spot where the incident had occurred.

In an hour-long drama in Amboli on Tuesday, what was initially thought to be an armed carjacking turned out to be a prank played by a vagabond with a toy gun. The police later arrested the man for robbery.

According to the police, the control room received a panicked call from businessman Jitesh Kalra (25), who told the police that his Honda City car had been forcibly taken over by an armed man.

“Kalra, in his call to the control room, said that he was parking his car near his residence on the Veera Desai Road when he saw a man sitting on the sidewalk. Kalra flashed his headlights to alert the man and was parking the car when the man suddenly lunged at him with a gun in his hand. Kalra got out of his car and fled the spot, scared to see a gun,” said Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Khatkare.

After over an hour of checking cars at nakabandis the police reached the spot where the incident had occurred. Kalra then saw his  car a few metres away and identified the  man in the driver’s seat was the same man who had taken over his car.

The police then took the man to the police station where, on being questioned, he said that he was irritated when Kalra flashed his headlights in his face and decided to play a prank out of sheer spite. “We have charged him with robbery under the IPC. He has told us he found the toy revolver on the road a few days ago,” said Khatkare.
