The 'Football Remembers Week' is jointly organised by the English Premier League the English Football Association and the Football League in partnership with the British Council with the aim of engaging football fans with a look-back at what happened on December 25 1914.

The Christmas Truce is celebrated to remember a series of ceasefires briefly held between British and German troops during the First World War in Flanders Belgium on Christmas Day in 1914 when soldiers exchanged gifts sang carols and played impromptu games of football in no man's land.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday H E Jon Wilks the Charge d' Affairs at the British Embassy said 'The Football Remembers Week plays an important role in helping young people understand the sacrifices made during the First World War.

'The story of the Christmas Truce on the Western Front reminds us that we should never lose our sense of humanity even in the depths of war. Sport is a great way of bringing people together. Football does that more than any other sport does.'

The top diplomat who arrived in Muscat recently said 'The United Kingdom is famed for its football teams around the world. Football can play a role in strengthening our long-standing bilateral relations with Oman.'
Meanwhile in the UK professional and amateur clubs have united to commemorate the Christmas Truce by organising a pre-match group photo shoot of players.

Also the Premier League will host an international Christmas Truce event in the Belgian city of Ypres from December 12-14.

Chelsea and Liverpool U12 academy players will take on sides from across Europe. The two teams made it through from last month's Premier League qualifying tournament. They will line up with teams from Hearts (Scotland) Rapid Vienna (Austria) Paris Saint-Germain Valenciennes (both France)Anderlecht Club Brugge (both Belgium) Borussia Moenchen-gladbach and Schalke (both Germany).
