Hot Young Creatives 2014: FCB Ulka's Vinita Kokate likes to read books & people's minds

    Synopsis

Vinita Kokate's currently reading the Marathi translation of 'The Story of George Washington Carver'; and probably assessing what the person sitting next to her is thinking.

She's ultra Zen for her age, her colleagues say. And she confirms. But don't you take our quiet illustrator for a submissive one.

Currently on the mantle of various Zee accounts, Kokate has gone to the extent of fighting with a brand manager for an idea that demanded saving. She's still learning the ropes though, admits the Sophia's Commercial Arts graduate who has a newfound understanding of the business after joining the industry.

The sophomore who drew sketches of commuters in a Mumbai local for fun, is transitioning into a professional who knows how to deal with a client, take a brief, process an idea. What's refreshing is that unlike many youngsters who are still 'figuring it out', Kokate knows she wants to stick to advertising. For good. (Headhunters, take note?)

Even her parents, once wary of her joining advertising and coming home at ungodly hours, support her decision. They keep newspaper cuttings of her ads to show relatives, she coyly shares.

In her idle time, she likes to read books and people's minds. She's currently reading the Marathi translation of 'The Story of George Washington Carver'; and probably assessing what the person sitting next to her is thinking.

The latter is a habit that's helped her every time a client was about to bomb an idea. She's not the one to whine but would like it if the work timings improved. What she'd love though is if agencies started going to clients with exciting and relevant briefs once in a while. So a good idea doesn't perish or turn into a scam ad.

Quiz: Which maun-vrat (pledge of silence) character are you?

First Ad Memory: The ancient 'Amul- The Taste of India' corporate film. Back then, I didn't even know all this is called advertising.
