NASDAQ:SANW

S&W Seed (SANW) announced on Dec. 09, 2014 that it has filed for a patent on a stevia variety, SW201. This is the second filing for a stevia variety by the company.

The leaf of this variety has an improved taste profile as compared to traditional varieties. Fresh or dry leaves can be used to sweeten beverages or to be added, like herbs, whilst cooking. SW201 can also be grown in home gardens. Stevia leaf is sold in health food stores as well grocery stores and through the internet. The overall stevia sweetener market is worth about $550 million (Zacks estimate for 2015) but there is no market data for the sales of leaf or plants.
