PAC head worried that departments can't get their budgets correct

The head of the Public Accounts Committee, John McGuinness, is hitting out at the number of Departments looking for more money at the end of the year.

Six of them, including Health, Education and Transport will today make their case for supplementary budgets.

They are looking for their share of a total €1.1bn that is expected to be allocated.

Fianna Fail Deputy John McGuinness, who heads up the Oireachtas spending watchdog, says it is not good enough.

He said: "The fact that these people can't get their budgets correct is something that is, in my opinion, very serious.

"We are not being given proper budgetary figures at budget time and then they know they can rely on the Government to push through supplementary estimates.

"Now, if that was a business that was coming to the end of the year looking for €1.1bn, well they simply wouldn't be in business."
