"A woman can defend herself even with a safety pin," said Yogesh Hedwikar, a freelance fitness trainer from Dadar. In the wake of the Delhi Uber cab attack, internet is awash with suggestions for women – chilli powder, nail filers, ball point and metallic pens, box cutters, pepper sprays, or for that matter, deo or sprays to kill mosquitoes or cockroaches.

But what if a woman does not have the time to search for these items in her bag and has to make a quick reaction? "Put the bag handles around the attacker's neck and toss him around. You can use your own body to your advantage as your own hand can disorient him. Use your fingers to gouge the eyes or a firm flat slap to demotivate him," said fitness expert Mickey Mehta, who recently trained the constabulary force of city police and is also training the quick response team. Mehta said that women shouldn't get scared and must remember that the assault is on the body and not the soul.

Mehta describes five steps to defeat an attacker – grab his head and hair and toss him around; gouge his eyes of the person with your fingers; use two thumbs to choke the gullet below the neck; use your elbows to smash his nose; and if in close contact to the attacker, bite his ears off.

"You have to constantly attack and scream at top of your lungs. When the attacker gives up psychologically, half the battle is won. Then you can pick your purse and spray a deo or pesticide spray at all of his facial orifices like eyes, nose, mouth, ears and that will knock him out. If the man is hairy, hold his chest till the skin rips off and even the attacker is strong and doesn't let go, keep kicking with all your might and it will land somewhere where it hurts," said Mehta who also said that women shouldn't be afraid of filing complaints with the police as they will be letting a criminal off the hook to attack other people.

Women must take few steps as it is a matter of their own safety, says Hedwikar. "One must devote some time to her fitness as carrying arms can be a legal problem. Running, push ups, pull ups and yoga for 15 minutes a day will also work. If you can, take a short course in any type of defence skills."
