Youth working as fire marshal at Goregaon exhibition loses leg in extinguisher explosion

A 23-year-old youth lost his leg while his compatriot's was fractured when a fire extinguisher exploded at the Goregaon Exhibition Centre on Friday. Both youth had been deployed as fire safety marshals for the three-day international pharma exhibition which concluded on Friday.

Both Devashish Pan, who lost his left leg, and Mulayam Singh (23) are recuperating at the civic-run Sion Hospital.

Talking to Mirror, Pan said, “After the exhibition concluded, we were asked to load all the fire extinguishing equipment onto a tempo. I was supposed to move one fire extinguisher to the transport vehicle, but it exploded just as I was about to pick it up. The force of the explosion burnt and crushed my left leg.“

A part of the exploding fire extinguisher hit Singh, who was standing next to Pan, and fractured his right leg. Both were rushed to Zenith Hospital in Goregaon, but were transferred to Sion Hospital as they were unable to afford treatment there.

“By the time Pan was brought in, the salvage period was over. We tried everything possible to save his leg but could not. His muscles were crushed and amputation was the only option left to save his life, as the injuries had cut off blood supply,“ added Dr Avinash Supe, dean, Sion Hospital. “Devashish was so badly injured that his leg was almost severed and he was bleeding profusely,“ Pan's cousin Rohan Das said.

His father Brikvesh, who rushed to Mumbai from Jharkhand, where he resides, added, `It's so painful to see my son in this state. He is handicapped for life now. I will retire soon and he was only breadwinner for the family.“

He also alleged negligence on the part of the fire services company that had employed his son. “There was no mistake on my son's part. How can a fire extinguisher explode?

This is clearly a case of negligence. We have already asked the police to investigate the matter and punish the culprits. I also want compensation for my son's suffering,“ Brikvesh said.

The contract for fire safety at the exhibition had been given to Santacruz-based Firebrake Fire Services, who provide fire extinguishers and fire marshals to event organisers. According to its proprietor Sheikh Iqbal Pasha, 300 fire extinguishers and fire marshals had been provided for the pharma exhibition.

“I have been running this firm for 30 years, and this is the first time such an incident has occurred. We always check the expiry dates of our extinguishers, and always refill them on time. I don't know how this happened. I have full sympathy for the injured boys,“ Pasha said.

Vanrai police station investigating officers said, “We are investigating if the fire extinguisher's expiry date was up.“ Goregaon police had earlier registered a negligence case in the matter.
