Are Skrillex and Zhu the same person? Stereosonic Brisbane provides clue

By Natalie Bochenski

It's a dance music mystery that may have been solved in Brisbane - could Zhu really be Skrillex?

Social media is rife with debate among electronic dance music fans after a performance by anonymous DJ "Zhu" at the Stereosonic festival on Sunday ended with him playing a song by the master of dubstep, Skrillex.

Secret identity... is Skrillex also Zhu?

A video uploaded to YouTube shows fans dancing to the song Faded, before it transitions into My Name is Skrillex.

The DJ concludes by saying: "Thank you so much, I hope you enjoyed the Zhu project."

Zhu has been active in the EDM scene for nearly a year but has stayed anonymous, asking to be judged on his/her music alone and performing live concealed by a white screen.

In the video Zhu performs Faded behind a white screen, which comes down as the music changes.

According to the Stereosonic timetable, Zhu's set ran from 7.05 to 7.55pm at the "Sonic" stage, with Skrillex scheduled from 8.50 to 10pm at the main "Stereo" stage.

Los Angeles-based Skrillex, real name Sonny John Moore, was on the Stereosonic Sunday line-up as well as Zhu, and is well-known for creating spin-off and side projects.

But industry news website Your EDM was adamant there was no truth to the revelation.

"Sorry, listeners and adoring fans: you have been trolled," their article read.

Other fans suggested that Zhu's real identity is that of electronic music artist Stephen Zhu.

More than 100 people were arrested across the two days of the festival, held at the RNA showgrounds. Most were charged with drug offences.
