The Chennai Corporation demolished the Needhi Karumariamman temple located on N.S.C. Bose Road on Saturday night. The temple, constructed on the footpath of the road by the Madras High Court, was demolished based on a direction to the civic body by the court.

A senior official of the civic body said that Kantha — the woman who ‘owned’ the temple — was given ample time to remove the idols.

But she did not do so and the structure was pulled down after the idols were removed to a temple nearby.

The official said policemen from Esplanade Police Station provided protection to the civic authorities to execute the demolition.
