Thick ice on QEII leads to 10-car pileup, one of several multivehicle crashes north of Calgary

Icy patches made for some slow moving traffic on the Highway 2 and Highway 2A Sunday as several multi-vehicle crashes in the Innisfail and Penhold area caused RCMP to temporarily shut down northbound lanes.

The largest pileup happened at the Penhold overpass at around 11:30 a.m. involving at least 10 vehicles.

RCMP report several people were treated on scene for injuries and one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Another scare came near Antler Hill where a semi tractor-trailer lost control on the ice and crashed into a parked RCMP cruiser.

The officer was outside the car at the time and is said to be unhurt.

All lanes on the QEII reopened Sunday afternoon but emergency crews are urging drivers to take it slow as rain, combined with cold temperatures has caused think ice to form on the road.
