Shekhar Kapur's next on SlumGods has AR Rahman
Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is finally in the news for some thing other than Paani. News is he is collaborating with AR Rahman for a movie to be made on SlumGods, a hip-hop group from Dharavi, which made news for its international collaborations, and the way its members fought all odds to make it big. The film will trace the journey of SlumGods and their founder, Akash Dhangar.
When contacted, Shekhar said, "We are still formulating the whole movement. It's part of a larger idea to bring a Renaissance in art (film, art, music, theatre) to kids living in slums starting with Dharavi, and create that model to take it to other parts of the world. And while Shekhar says it's too early to talk about the details, he avers, I am amazed at the creative energy that comes from the kids in the slums, the rest I am sure will fall into place. The talent is amazing, almost stunning. What's interesting is that apart from Rahman, there is yet another Tamil connect to this film. This group has many `southies' as part of their 17-member crew, with Akash himself being part of the Kunchikorve community, originally hailing from the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu. The music, of course, will be under the careful supervision of Rahman, with Shekhar helping the group write their story , and giving technical inputs. Ask Shekhar about Rahman's role and he says, No idea just yet. Like I said, it's too early for the details. But there is a definite Tamil connect many of the boys are Tamilians, and a lot of the rap is in TamilMarathiEnglish mixed."
