Jyothi Jayachandran, wife of a teacher in the Maldives K.K. Jayachandran who has been placed under detention by the Maldives police for the last 8 months, has appealed to the Centre to seek his release.

Ms. Jyothi, a resident of Kohinoor in Malappuram district, in her petition to Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, said her husband had been falsely accused of abusing a student. He was arrested on April 5, 2014, following a complaint. She said it was found that the incident was blown out of proportion. “Subsequently, the complaint was withdrawn by the victim and his parents, but the police pursued the case by extending his custody, ” Ms. Jyothi said..

She said the authorities concerned had forwarded the complaint withdrawal report along with a recommendation for his release. However the Maldives government had not closed the case. . “I have approached the Indian High Commission and Embassy office at the Maldives. So far, I have got no positive response from them,” she added.

Mr. Jayachandran was working in Faafu Feali Atoll School in the Maldives.
