Florent sets 50m backstroke world record

DOHA - Florent Manaudou set his second world record in 24 hours as he claimed the 50m backstroke title in 22.22sec at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships in Doha Saturday. The 24-year-old Frenchman consigned to history a record that had been held by Peter Marshall of the United States since November 2009. Alia Atkinson of Jamaica equalled the world record of 1min 02.36sec as she snatched victory in the 100m breaststroke. Ruta Meilutyte appeared on course to successfully defend her title but she was chased down in the final length by Atkinson who mouthed 'me?' in shock as she looked at the scoreboard. Russia set a new world record of 1minute 22.60seconds en-route to the gold medal in the men's 4x50m freestyle relay. The quartet were followed by the United States with Italy in third.
