Attack on Lobo needs crime branch probe: NCP
PANAJIi: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has demanded that the Calangute MLA Michael Lobo assault case should be handed over to the crime branch so that all angles
including that of extortion, are probed into.
Condemning the incident, vice president and chief spokesperson of NCP, Trajano D’Mello said this attack is once again an example of breakdown of law and order in the state.
“The attack should be condemned by every right thinking member of civil society,” he said.
The primary reason for the assault on Michael Lobo is allegedly due to permission being given to a night bazaar wherein it is claimed that the ex-deputy sarpanch Cleophas Fernandes is reported to have demanded 1,00,000 from Lobo.
“For this attack, Section 307 (attempt to murder) is being slapped on the culprits,” said D’Mello, “But, what about charges of extortion of money for granting illegal permissions?”
“Why should Fernandes, who is merely a member of the panchayat, try to extort money from Lobo despite the fact that the Arpora-Nagoa panchayat is controlled by Lobo? This angle needs to be investigated and the matter needs to be handed over to the crime branch,” he demanded.

D’Mello said this is the third case in which the ruling party MLAs are attacked allegedly by their own party members. St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh was attacked by a group of masked armed persons with iron rods, sticks and ‘lathis’ while returning from an event in north Goa, in BJP represented Tivim constituency on a late December night, last year.
Nearly a month after the incident, in January this year, Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldesai was injured and received stitches on his head after he was allegedly attacked by a fellow MLA at Goa Niwas in New Delhi. When questioned by the media, the minister claimed to have “tripped and fallen on the stairs”.
