Guwahati: The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has ordered all bus operators in the city to connect to GPS (Global Positioning System) service before January 31, 2015, to keep an eye on errant buses and ease traffic snarls.
It will also set up a control room to monitor the movement of the buses and determine their routes.
Both private and public operators have been asked to connect to GPS.
“We want to systematize the transport system to help commuters. If everything works out properly, many traffic problems will be solved,” Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner M Angamuthu said after chairing a meeting with regional transport office personnel in the city on Friday.
GPS is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides information on time and locates a particular vehicle in all-weather conditions. To monitor the entire traffic movement in the city, traffic police will set up a control room before January 31, 2015.
The DC has directed the district transport office to solve taxi parking issues within 15 days.
“No mini taxi drivers and private cabs will be allowed to park their vehicles randomly on the roads. The violators will be punished,” the DC said.
New routes have been sanctioned for city buses from Adabari to Six Mile via Narengi on Friday.
The DC said the district administration will also introduce GPS in all 400 new city buses which will be launched from January next year.

Pradip Das, the general secretary of Guwahati Transport Association (GTA), said they will look into the details of the new order before taking a decision.
“We need to go through the details of the order. The administration has given a deadline till January. We need to see if it is possible to do the necessary before that,” Das said.
The DC also said the district administration will start GPS system in all the 400 city buses to be launched on the streets from Januray next year
