A senior citizen was allegedly duped of Rs 92,000 after the security guard of an ATM kiosk in Kandivali (West) replaced his ATM card on the pretext of helping him. The Charkop police have arrested the guard, Vijay Karwarkar, 40.

When did victim go alone to ATM?
The incident occurred on November 30, when the victim, 62-year-old Imtiaz Ali, a resident of Malwani, had gone to an HDFC ATM on Old Link Road, Kandivali (West).

Anand Koli, senior inspector of Charkop police, said, "Ali did not know to operate an ATM. He is usually accompanied by his son. However, he decided to go by himself to withdraw some money. He is a heart patient and his son-in-law had deposited more than Rs 1 lakh from Dubai into his Bank of Baroda account."

Why did he need guard's help?
According to the police, Ali was unable to operate the ATM, so he called Karwarkar. "The guard was told the PIN number and he helped Ali withdraw Rs 10,000 as requested. However, after the transaction was done, Karwarkar stealthily replaced the card without Ali's knowledge," said inspector Koli.

How did the crime come to light?
On Wednesday (December 3), when Ali tried withdrawing more money along with his son, he was unable to do so. He then approached his bank and inquired. That was when the bank authorities discovered that he had a defunct card and an amount of Rs 92,000 had been withdrawn from his original card.

How did police crack case?
Ali then approached the Charkop police. "We registered an offence. After inquiring about the sequence of events, we questioned Karwarkar. Although he initially denied doing anything, he confessed later that he had deliberately replaced the man's card and withdrawn the cash over a period of three days," said Koli.

Guard blew up 78k in dance bars
The police recovered Rs 14,000 from Karwarkar, but he had allegedly used up the remaining cash in dance bars. The accused was arrested on Wednesday and remanded to police custody. The police are inquiring if he has committed a similar offence in the past.
