An Edmonton man is expected to face charges in connection to speeding in an uninsured vehicle with open liquor following a Friday morning traffic stop near Airdrie.

At approximately 10:25 a.m., a member of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit observed a southbound 2009 Nissan Versa travelling at an extremely high rate of speed. The officer clocked the vehicle at approximately 170 km/h.

The cable barrier dividing the QEII prohibited the officer from pursuing the car and additional RCMP units were deployed.

A second officer recorded the Nissan travelling at a speed of 162 km/h and the vehicle was intercepted. During the traffic stop, the officer determined the man was wanted on outstanding warrants, had open liquor in the vehicle, and was driving a vehicle which was unregistered and uninsured.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 43-year-old man from Edmonton, was arrested and transported to the Airdrie RCMP Detachment where he provided breath samples. According to RCMP members, the driver’s blood alcohol level was in excess of 0.16, more than double the minimum level of impairment.

The unidentified man has not been formally charged but RCMP anticipate the following charges:

  • Impaired Driving
  • Driving Over Legal Limit
  • Dangerous Driving
  • Unregistered Vehicle
  • Uninsured Vehicle
  • Open Liquor
