Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proved to be different (“ >Deconstructing the Modi foreign policy ,” Dec. 4), by demonstrating his ability to handle the delicate subject of diplomacy. While critics may berate him for his frequent foreign trips, they must realise that he has inherited a weak India, handed over to him by the UPA. As suggested, he needs to handle regional and domestic issues carefully and work out solutions.

India’s stature internationally has to be rebuilt in stages. In an increasingly globalised world, it is difficult to isolate domestic priorities from one’s international standing. One must support the government’s ambitious plans to connect internationally for various development projects.

Mr. Modi’s approach to foreign policy is a proactive one when compared to the moves made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, mainly because of the overwhelming mandate that Mr. Modi has received. The guarantee of political stability can be leveraged further. In the early days, he has made all the right moves. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj must make more stand-alone visits in order to enable Mr. Modi to focus on domestic issues.
