Sophie Choudry: I put on a kilo every time I come back from Jaipur
Sophie Choudry has travelled to seven cities in the last six days, and one of her destinations was Jaipur.
In the city for a private event, the singer and actress told us, “I love coming to Jaipur. I manage to come here a few times a year, and whenever I have the time, I try to buy jewellery and handicrafts from the local markets. The first time I came here, some eight or nine years ago, there were no malls or anything.
I’ve see Jaipur grow and change massively in the last few years, which is great. But it’s always been stunning. It’s a beautiful city with lovely people and great food. I think I put on a kilo every time I come back from Jaipur.” She added, “It’s gotten quite cold though. I’m a Londoner so it shouldn’t bother me, but I guess once you live in Mumbai you get used to a certain kind of weather.”
Even with all the travelling that she’s been doing, the one thing that Sophie says she’s not good at is packing light. “The concept of minimal packing doesn’t exist for me, and every time I go somewhere I feel like taking my entire wardrobe because I like dressing up,” she told us. Sophie’s dressing sense has found many admirers, and on being asked if that sometimes overwhelms her, she said, “Because I grew up in London and studied in Paris, I’m never not well put together. So the stress of dressing up is not an issue. And 99% of the time I don’t even work with a stylist.”
Sophie has been busy travelling and performing a lot this year, but she hasn’t released an album in some time. When we asked her about that, she said, “I released a song earlier this year with Raghav Sachar, so it hasn’t even been that long. But full albums just don’t work anymore. You put in so much time and effort in making a whole album but people will only buy the songs they like. So apart from Honey Singh and a few Punjabi singers, not many people are doing that now. The market has changed, and a single with a music video works better now.” She’s also sung for Preity Zinta in Ishkq in Paris, and has another Bollywood project coming up. “I can’t talk about it right now, but I’m in the song and I’ve sung the song, and I’m very excited about it. It should be out in January next year,” she explained.

The singer was also part of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa this year, where even though she didn’t win, she was a favourite among the fans. She said, “This year just flew by, and five months were taken up by Jhalak, which was a great experience. Between Jhalak and the one episode I did for Bigg Boss, I’ve gotten such a great fan base on television, it has people from the younger age group and the family audience. When I was a VJ, I had a very niche audience following me, but this is different. Now, wherever I go, people come up to me and talk about Jhalak. And what has happened is that even for the people who thought I was a bit of a pop diva or fashionista, they got to see a different side of me. They got the see the hardworking, talented Sophie.” But even then, Sophie doesn’t plan to do any more reality shows. “I’m not a huge fan of reality shows. I said no to Jhalak for three years!”
